Artist Tania Guerrera will be among merchants and artists “Bringing out the Arts Village Wide” Oct 19, 2006 thru Oct 22, 2006. Thirteen retail shops in downtown Nyack, NY will present “mini gallery” exhibits of 13 top artists, from the County in celebration of Nyack’s new positioning and slogan “NYACK Gateway to New York Arts & Culture.”

Retailers, bars, restaurants and the “Helen Hayes Theater” will participate with all forms of the arts during the Art Walk Nyack, Oct 19, 2006 thru Oct 22, 2006 four-day event. Thirteen retail shops in downtown Nyack, NY will present “mini gallery” exhibits of 13 top artists, from the County in celebration of Nyack’s new positioning and slogan “NYACK Gateway to New York Arts & Culture.” The Nyack Parking Authority is providing free valet parking on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 & 22.

Tania Guerrera will present her works at the popular restaurant Casa Del Sol’s new establishment Manna. Manna will open directly next door to Casa Del Sol, and plans to become a “take-out boutique” where customers will be able to buy light healthy meals, have a drink, buy art, listen to world music and enjoy the ambiance.

Artist Tania Guerrera is a Puerto Rico born New York resident her work has been displayed at: The Harlem Book Fair, Nyack Street Fair, Garnerville Industrial Arts Center, Haverstraw Arts and Antiques Fair, Paradox Nightclub, Baltimore, Maryland, Yoga Mountain Institute in New City, Shelter Night Club NYC, SUNY Empire State College in Westchester County, The Tunnel Nightclub NYC, the Frank Welles Gallery in Garnerville and she participated in the juried “Justice for All: Artist Reflect on the Death Penalty” show in Austin, Texas.

She also worked as a teaching artist for El Museo Del Barrio located on Museum Mile, NYC; there she ran an educational workshop about the Taino People, the natives of the Caribbean. Her work was exhibited at the Pomona Cultural Center were she was an alternate artist in residence. Recently she displayed her work during the Legislature’s annual Black History Month exhibit and the Spring Valley Legislature office recognized her for contributions to the community.

She is the author of the book Thoughts and Transformations, which features poetry, art and revolutionary essays.

The Black Experience: His & Hers Art Show Keeps Growing

The February 2011 art show at Iona College: The Black Experience: His & Hers A Tribute to Black History exhibited at The Brother Kenneth Chapman Gallery in the Iona College Arts Centers show was amazing. With local artists Charles McGill, Tania Guerrera (me), Bernard Cameron, Atiim Turnbull, Evierobbie, Earlie Richardson and curator Peridot Smith. And it just keeps growing.
The Black Experience: His & Hers was well attended, entertaining, educational and full of positive intellectual vibes.
Numerous reviews and write-ups helped this show become a success. I was happy to see many New Rochelle community members attend. I have happily been stopped by people around town letting me know that they attended the show, and of course how much they enjoyed and learned from it.
Another thing people emphasized is how needed it is for New Rochelle to have events like this. Around 200 New Rochelle High School students attended the show as a field trip.
The art just keeps expanding with an art video by Nancy-Jo Johnson that uses the artwork and music from the show. The video creates a montage with the Juggaknot song: Use your Confusion, music track production by Kevin Smith.
Enjoy this video and look out for a cameo appearance by Rasta Hip-Hop artist Jolomite (previously Marco Polo) from InI Mighty Lockdown.

I was doing a search to find out who is linked to my website and found this interesting site that used my artwork in their blog. I read some more and it had some good reads. So thank you to the "Hoy Me Desperte de Arena" blog. A lot of info about Puerto Rico.

The blog posting that used my artwork "Taino Girl" is one that discusses in a poetic format the invasion of Puerto Rico by columbus. Yes that "holiday" is upon us and the question is when will the hippocracy end? columbus did NOT discover America, our people were here already and our other ancestors were brought over by force, so how long are we going to pretend that columbus day is a holiday? Right???

Joaquin Phoenix's Hip-Hop "career"

This is my response to the article Joaquin Phoenix thanks Letterman for his "beat down"

The first interview Joaquin Phoenix did with Letterman was very funny, I really thought he was trying to be like Matisyahu but for Hip-Hop music.

I will say this, I think maybe Joaquin's Hip-Hop act was a bit strange, and not very well received by Hip-Hop listeners, and maybe that is why he is claiming it was all a hoax.

The fact is no one took him seriously as a hip-hop artist. Maybe to save face he is saying it was a hoax. Or is he such a great actor that he fooled not only Letterman but also everyone else who tought he had lost his mind? Who knows? Take a look at the video and decide. Either way I still like him, my affinity for him comes from his Puerto Rico ties, he was born and lived there as a child. I also admire his work as an activist and humanitarian.

Co-op Gardening

So I went to de-weed the soil on my little organic plot at the community co-op garden. The weather was nice I actually spent 3 hours there. Loved getting my hands in the dirt. I'm looking forward to eating some produce I grew myself. Last year I had a nice amount of spinach and lettuce, and lots of Jalapeño peppers that I put in jars with oil. I also planted flowers, marygolds that grew about 4 feet. I also planted: Sage, Thyme, Lavender, Rosemary and Cilantro.

Strawberries that I still have not had any berries from and tomatoes that did not make it due to blithe. I will put up the before and after pictures soon.

This year the plan is:
Spinach
Lettuce
Sage (3x's as much as last year to make smudges)
Rosemary (so I can make some bread with it)
Thyme
Cilantro (for sofrito)
Sunflowers
maybe a bush of beans???
Blueberries

Let's see how it goes, it went well last year and I did not really know what I was doing, will keep you posted.

Be counted as a Taino on the US Census 2010

The United Confederation of Taino People has partnered with the US Census Bureau to make the Taino be counted under the "American Indian or Alaskan Native" label. Basically when filling out the census a Taino person would check their race as "American Indian or Alaskan Native" and then proceed to fill in their tribal affiliation as Taino. This is a chance to literally (at least on paper) resurrect our Taino heritage.

For hundreds of years we have been lied to and told that the Taino people are "extinct" which made no sense to those of us who knew that our abuelitas and abuelos, our ancestors were Taino people, thus making one a Taino as well. So here is our chance to be counted and given back our identity on an official governmental level.

The census is done every ten years. I have been doing some genealogy research and have found some very interesting things. My grandmother, great-grandmothers, grandfather and great-grandfathers are alternately listed as "white", "colored", and or "mulatto" on the Puerto Rico censuses going back to the 1850's. The discrepancy is a result of the "native" or Taino designation being dropped, and added back in over time as well as the census taker checking off a person's race be sight. Our family's oral history is that we had Taino and European (not sure what kind) on my Grandmother's side and Mulatto (African & French) on my Grandfather's.

A recent genetic study by the Universidad de Puerto Rico on the island of Boriken (Puerto Rico) shows that at least 61% to 70% of people in the study had Amer-Indian DNA. This website has a good article on this topic: Indigenous Puerto Rico: DNA evidence upsets established history.

Here is another link UPR study finds high Taino DNA rate: Tests contradict theory of extinction of P.R. natives. Studies are in the works in the other Islands with Taino heritage.

So if you are Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Haitian or from any of the Caribbean islands there is a big chance that you may be Taino. Go through your family's oral history, look in the mirror and decide what race you would like to be listed as. Years from now your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the many generations to come will thank you. The Ancestors will have an Areyto in our honor.

Time to get serious with my art studio

I finally have an actual studio, I no longer have to carve out a corner in my bedroom, or living room in order to paint. I finally have a studio. I seem to walk around in circles, because the space goes around in a circle, trying to figure out what project to do next. This is all so new to me that I don't know what to do with myself! I plan to start letting people visit, I have had a couple of people visit and they were kind of impressed (I think). A real artist studio Yeah! Ok so what next right?

I am really planning to start bloggin more often, this is also new to me, I started this blog a few years ago and I have only posted twice. Stay tuned to find out about any masterpieces I come up with now that I have my own room with a view. A view of Trump Tower in New Rochelle to be exact. So next I plan to put up some pictures and figure out how to sell more art to pay the rent.
